Great fishing on Lido Key despite storms

Fishing was excellent in the waters surrounding Lido Key this week!  However, weather was an issue as morning thunderstorms interrupted the action.  Speckled trout were the most plentiful species landed, but clients on Lido Key fishing charters also landed Spanish mackerel, bluefish, mangrove snapper, jack crevelle, gag grouper, ladyfish, and more.  Live bait has been easy to catch and chumming the grass flats in 6' of water has been a deadly technique.

Sarasota fishing steady despite challenging weather

Unstable weather patterns have resulted in some challenging conditions for anglers on Sarasota fishing charters.  We experienced quite a bit of rain and wind from a recent tropical system.  The key after these storms is to find "clean" water that is not all stirred up from the wind.  Speckled trout and mangrove snapper bit pretty well in Robert's Bay, just sout of Lido Key, hitting live shrimp.  Also, Big Sarasota Pass was good for ladyfish and a couple of sharks and took jigs and shrimp.  The flats close to the Yacht Club Channel produced a bunch of trout and ladyfish as well.  Baitfish are showing up but they are too small to use for bait, but that will change and soon I will be chumming with the shiners.

Stable weather results in good fishing on Lido Key, Sarasota, Florida

The weather has been the story this year, with some unusual patterns challenging anglers. Sarasota experienced normal summer patterns over the last week, with light east winds in the morning shifting to an afternoon sea breeze. Grass flats in 6' to 10' of water produced speckled trout, pompano, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, jacks, snapper, and ladyfish for clients on Sarasota fishing charters. Bass Assassin jigs in red/gold shiner produced well, as did live shrimp. Fly casters scored on the same species using heavy Clouser patterns in red/gold and chartreuse/white. It looks like we have another week of tough weather coming this week.

Snook and speckled trout hitting in Sarasota, Florida

The bite has been good for anglers on Sarasota fishing charters out of Lido Key in Sarasota with me of late. The best pattern has been to hit shorelines in Robert's Bay that have schools of glass minnows on them, casting shallow diving plugs for snook, trout, snapper, and jacks. This has been an early bite. Once the sun rose, moving to the deep grass flats and casting live shrimp under popping corks and Bass Assassin jigs produced speckled trout to 21", bluefish, jacks, mackerel, and ladyfish. Big Pass on the south end of Lido Key has been full of ladyfish with a few other species mixed in.

Good fishing in between fronts on Lido Key, Sarasota, Florida

Well, winter finally showed up here on Lido Key in Sarasota, Florida. The fronts were strong, but not severe, bringing 20 knot winds but no rain, though we could certainly use it. But, fishing rebounded quickly afterwards, with sheepshead and snsapper being caught in Big Pass using shrimp. Clients on Lido Key fishing charters also did well casting jigs in Big Pass, catching loads of ladyfish with a few Spanish mackerel mixed in. The middlegrounds is a deep grass flat just north of Lido Key and produced good action on speckled trout, bluefish, pompano, and loads of ladyfish.

Great weather and great fishing on Lido Key, Sarasota, Florida

The wind finally laid down and while the fishing was still good, it was much easier with light breezes and flat calm waters. Clients on Lido Key fishing charters did very well on a variety of species. Big Sarasota Pass flows between Lido Key and Siesta Key and provided great action. Sheepshead were plentiful in the rocks and hit live and frozen shrimp fished on the bottom. The pass itself was full of ladyfish with quite a few Spanish mackerel and the occasional pompano mixed in. Jigs and diving plugs worked best for those species. Fly anglers also scored using Clouser Minnow flies. The nearby flats produced speckled trout, mackerel, pompano, gag grouper, and loads of ladyfish. We do have a front approaching, but the bite should pick back up right afterwards.

Excellent fishing on Lido Key, Sarasota, despite breezy conditions

Fishing has been good of late in the waters surrounding Lido Key in Sarasota, Florida, for clients going out on Sarasota fishing charters, despite several days of strong wind. Big Sarasota Pass borders Lido Key and produced great action on ladyfish in the center of the pass. There is a ton of structure as well, and it holds sheepshead, snapper, and grouper, along with offering a break from the breezes. Shrimp fished on the bottom is the best technique. Jigs work best when drifting the pass for pompano, ladyfish, and bluefish. The deep grass flats in Sarasota Bay are producing speckled trout, bluefish, pompano, mackerel, and ladyfish.

Sheepshead bite is strong on Lido Key, Sarasota, Florida

We are right in the heart of the sheepshead spawning run in Sarasota Bay. There is a lot of structure in Big Sarasota Pass which borders the south end of Lido Key. Clients on Lido Key fishing charters with Capt Jim are landing good numbers of these tasty saltwater fish using shrimp fished on the bottom. Mangrove snapper and gag grouper are also being caught as well. Docks and bridges throughout the area are also holding plenty of fish. Also, the deep grass flats are producing trout, bluefish, pompano, and ladyfish for anglers casting jigs.

Good fishing in Sarasota between fronts

While it is winter here on Lido Key in Sarasota, Florida, the temperatures are still running ten degrees or so above normal, and that has kept the gamefish feeding up on the grass flats. Speckled trout, pompano, bluefish, and loads of ladyfish are hitting jigs in 6' to 10' of water. Weekly fronts slow down the bite for a day or two as they bring strong winds, but the action has been bouncing back quickly. The sheepshead spawning run is in full swing and rocky structure in Big Sarasota Pass, which lies at the south end of Lido Key, is full of these tasty panfish. A live shrimp fished on the bottom works best.  That is my weekly Lido Key fishing report.

Winter fishing tactics in Sarasota

It has been a mild winter to this point in the first week of February here for anglers fishing Sarasota Florida. But, fish are still moving towards their winter patterns and habits. The deep grass flats are still producing a lot of fish when conditions are right, which means clean water and water temperatures in the 60s. Speckled trout, pompano, bluefish, and ladyfish hit jigs and live bait. Sheepshead moved into the area on their annual spawning run. Most of the fish that clients are catching are fat and full of roe. The rocky structure in Big Pass at the south end of Lido Key is a very reliable spot, as are the docks along Bird Key. Mangrove snapper and juvenile gag grouper will take a shrimp as well. Snook will be moving up into the creeks and canals and like a suspending jerk bait. The key to angling success this time of year is adapting to the current conditions and taking advantage of the really nice days.
